China expects huge Typhoon Goni waves
BEIJING, Aug. 21 (Xinhua) — China’s State Oceanic Administration (SOA) has predicated severe waves induced by Typhoon Goni in the East China Sea and South China Sea in the coming days.
The Bashi Channel will see waves with a height of up to 11 meters by noon on Saturday, with waves as high as nine meters forecast for regions east of Taiwan. Waves up to five meters were forecast for the Taiwan Strait and the northeast part of South China Sea.
Typhoon Goni spun west across the Pacific Ocean and became a super typhoon on Wednesday. It is expected to move to the East China Sea on Sunday evening.
The SOA has ordered an emergency response for maritime disasters, urging the departments concerned to step up efforts to monitor, forecast and survey disasters.
Vessels have been told to leave these regions as soon as possible and seek shelter in ports.
